How It's Calculated

A motor's kW rating is its output at the shaft. The current it draws depends on the electrical input, which is the output divided by the efficiency, and on the power factor:

where is the rated output in kW, the line-to-line voltage (three-phase) or the terminal voltage (single-phase), the full load efficiency as a fraction and the full load power factor. These are the formulas in the Schneider Electric Electrical Installation Guide (“Induction motors”).

Worked Example

An 11 kW three-phase motor on 400 V with an efficiency of 89% and a power factor of 0.85:

  • Input power = 11 / 0.89 = 12.36 kW
  • Input apparent power = 12.36 / 0.85 = 14.54 kVA
  • 21.0 A

IEC 60947-4-1 Annex G lists 22 A for an 11 kW motor at 400 V; the difference is the efficiency and power factor the table assumes.

Typical Motor Full Load Currents

Rated operational currents of standard three-phase motors from IEC 60947-4-1 Annex G, as reproduced in the Schneider Electric Electrical Installation Guide. Use them as guidance before the motor is selected; the nameplate current governs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Motor Current Questions Answered

How do I work out a three-phase motor's full load current?

Divide the rated output by √3, the line voltage, the efficiency and the power factor: I = P × 1000 / (√3 × V × η × cos φ). An 11 kW motor at 400 V with 89% efficiency and a power factor of 0.85 draws about 21 A.

Why is the efficiency in the formula?

A motor's kW rating is its mechanical output at the shaft. The supply has to provide that output plus the motor's losses, so the electrical input is the output divided by the efficiency. Leaving the efficiency out underestimates the current by 5 to 20%.

Should I use the calculated current or the nameplate current?

Use the nameplate full load current when you have the motor, because it reflects that motor's actual efficiency and power factor. The calculation and the typical table values are for design before the motor is chosen.

Where do the typical full load currents come from?

They are the rated operational currents IEC 60947-4-1 Annex G gives for standard three-phase cage induction motors, as reproduced in the Schneider Electric Electrical Installation Guide. They are guidance for selecting switchgear, not a guarantee for any particular motor.

What is the rule of thumb for amps per kW at 400 V?

A three-phase motor at 400 V draws roughly 2 A per kW at full load around 10 to 20 kW, nearer 1.7 A per kW for large motors, and 2.5 A per kW or more for small motors, which have lower efficiency and power factor.

Does the starting current matter for cable sizing?

Cables are sized for the full load current, with the voltage drop during starting checked separately. Direct-on-line starting draws about 6 to 8 times full load current for a few seconds, which the protection must ride through.
